I embarked on my first fishing outing at age 6, where I was invited to a friend’s birthday party at a trout farm. After landing my first ever trout I was hooked (pun intended) and I have been fishing ever since in several different disciplines from shark to fly fishing, I have done it and loved it all. My niche passion, however, is vested in specimen carp angling! I cannot pinpoint the exact reasoning for loving this discipline so much, as I believe the reasons are endless. In a recent article I spoke about being an “amateur of the sport” as derived from Latin, “an amateur” is a lover or an admirer of an activity and I personally feel that will always describe my role in the sport, an admirer always willing to learn!
Due to very tight work constraints and availability of time I have to maximize my time spent on the bank and often have to streamline an approach geared towards a specific goal. Currently, I am focusing on my syndicate venue where I am attempting to breach that magical 50lb Carp barrier! I am also a fan of wild waters, however, I do not get out to them nearly as much as I would like, but when time allows I am looking to get 40lb+ fish as I fell short of this mark recently with a 38lb+ fish.
When it comes to my favourite tactics, I would submit that I am a creature of habit and when I have found a proven solution, I am hesitant to change. I think this stems from a lot of my role models in the sport still using the same rig after 20 odd years and I am of the same thinking whereby 90% of my fishing is done through a standard hair rig and the remain percentages are made up between Ronnie Rigs for pop ups and Slip-D rigs for wafters. I am a massive fan of boilies and fish for the Sticky Baits UK promo team and find most of my fishing approach is solely geared towards baits chasing larger fish as expeditiously as possible, as my time is often so limited.
I currently manage the Fox SA Instagram and Facebook accounts, whilst running my own Instagram fishing account, with the tag @thelegalangler. I am blessed to have a partner and peg mate all in one, with Delene “Lee” Serfontein and we have started a couple fishing hashtag (#LeeJCarpCouple) which we also intend on broadening the brand very soon!
I have written for the Carp Angler Magazine and have taken up a roll as a constant contributor for the publication, as well as a contributor to the Sticky Baits UK “News” section!

I was born into a family of passionate fisherman who ignited my love for the outdoors, adventure and fishing!
I enjoy travelling locally and abroad to fish for a number of species using different techniques including fly fishing, artlure, specimen carp fishing and rock & surf angling. I have also competed in Bass tournaments for a number of years.
I am privileged to be a Pro Staff angler at Fish on Africa and thoroughly enjoy using and promoting the full range of top quality brands and products they distribute!
I have been fishing Specimen Carp for more than 12 years. I have used many brands during this time, but always end back on Fox as this is where my heart lies. I am in my second year of being a Pro Staff member for Fox South Africa and will hopefully be around for many years to come. Over the years I have managed to catch 5 carp over 40lb from 4 different provinces and 2 carp over 50lb. I work as an actuary in the insurance industry and my fishing consists mostly of weekends with the occasional long session to a special venue. I am the co-owner of Nutrabaits South Africa and import and distribute these baits.

From a very young age, I like so many of the carping ladies in the fishing community, headed to the waters with my family, who laid the foundation and the knowledge of my angling today and not to mention, ignite the passion that would help me achieve all I have in this industry!
Today I am proud to say that those first steps have lead to being an angler working with the likes of Fox International, as well as Sticky Baits UK! I am blessed enough to be able to do what I love at the highest level.
Time at the bank is at a premium as both myself and my partner/ peg mate (Jono Steyn) both have demanding careers therefore we have to maximize time spent in the session, which governs the targets we set for ourselves. Currently, I am focusing on my syndicate venue where I recently landed my first 40lb+ and I am still building experience at targeting larger fish. Myself and Jono both enjoy wild waters, where I too have just fallen short of the 40lb bracket and intend on bettering that in the near future!
When it comes to my favourite tactics, I have tried a few different approaches previously but most of my fishing is uniform since finding tactics that have worked for me since being on the syndicate. Rigs are mostly standard hair rigs and Ronnie Rigs. I am a fan of boilies and particles and fishing with Jono we operate as a team with an approach suited to seeking out bigger fish under our time constraints.
I run my own Instagram fishing account, with the tag @deleneserfontein. I too have a partner and peg mate with whom I have started a couple fishing hashtag (#LeeJCarpCouple) which we also intend on broadening in the near future.
I have written for the Carp Angler Magazine and will be contributing further in the future, as well as contributing further to the Sticky Baits UK “News” section, which I too have previously written for!

I started my Specimen Carp Angling pursuit 18 years ago in the lakes and channels of the UK. It was a privilege to learn from the founders of this sport. After 2 years in the UK and completing my studies in South Africa I started working in KZN where I quickly discovered many hidden and unfished carp waters.
My goal the last few years was to break the magical 40lb mark in these wild waters (doing so 2 years ago with a stunner of 46lb). I prefer to fish at range but also the exact opposite where my other passion is doing close quarter battle with KZN river carp. My approach to carp fishing is very simple. Find the fish, feed them quality bait and then of course fish strong reliable end tackle.
Being a wild water carp angler I use to a big fan of particles, two years ago I was fortunate to become part of a leading bait company. I was blown away by the results of these baits in wild water conditions. Boilies are definitely big fish bait. My current goal I will have to say is a 45lb + mirror carp. Chacing monster carp is all good and well but the last couple of years I have really felt in love with everything that comes with this game, appreciating every fish (big or small) nature and sharing the journey with my wife and friends.
